-A traditional remedy for cystitis.
Cranberry has long been used to prevent and treat urinary tract infections. Originally, this fruit was administered in order to acidify the urine and thus create an environment unfavorable to the development of bacteria.
Cystitis and Urinary Infection:
Cystitis is normally accompanied by urethritis, inflammation of the urethra . The most common symptoms are:
-Pain or burning when urinating.
-An abnormally high frequency of urination during the day (sometimes the need to urinate also occurs at night).
-A persistent feeling of needing to urinate.
-Cloudy urine, which gives off an unpleasant odor.
-Pressure in the lower abdomen.
UTI is caused by the abnormal proliferation of infectious agents in the urinary system which includes the kidneys, ureters, bladder and urethra. Cystitis is by far the most common form of urinary tract infection, it almost exclusively affects women. This is inflammation of the bladder. Most of the time, the inflammation is caused by the proliferation of intestinal bacteria of the Escherichia coli type, which are numerous around the anus. The bacteria pass from the vulvar region to the bladder up the urethra. Anything that interferes with bladder emptying increases the risk of cystitis.
Since then, studies have shown that its beneficial effects lie rather in its ability to inhibit the adhesion of bacteria to the walls of the urethra and bladder. Not benefiting from an anchor point, these bacteria are then naturally eliminated by natural means. In June 2002, a study suggests that this beneficial effect occurs within two hours of ingestion and remains perceptible for more than 10 hours in the urine. Studies carried out on women prone to repeated cystitis have shown that the consumption of Cranberry juice or extracts reduced the relapse rate.
A favorable opinion recognized by Afssa
For the first time in France, the French Food Safety Agency (Afssa) recently declared on the cranberry. On April 6, 2004, this national agency issued a favorable opinion on both the safety and the beneficial effects of this product: "the consumption of Vaccinium macrocarpon juice (containing 36 mg of measured proanthocyanidins) leads to a reduction in the frequency of urinary tract infections due to certain E. uropathogenic coli (…) in adult women.
Thus, since that date, these products can benefit from the very official claim: "contributes to reducing the fixation of certain E. coli on the walls of the urinary tract".
Antioxidant properties of Cranberry:
Of all common fruits, Cranberry is the richest in antioxidants ahead of grapes , apples, plums and blueberries well known for this property. Antioxidants are components which, thanks to their anti-radical effect, fight against cellular ageing.
Cranberry from TruNature® laboratories helps prevent and treat urinary tract infections by avoiding the use of antibiotics and also to fight against aging cellular.
