Promotes healthy sleep habits. Effective for treating insomnia, jet lag, the immune system, as well as supporting cardiovascular health.

Melatonin is a hormone produced by the pineal gland (also called the epiphysis). The secretion of melatonin is inhibited during the day and stimulated during the night, the maximum values are reached around 2 or 3 am, hence its other name: the hormone of sleep or the hormone of darkness. Through melatonin, the pineal gland informs the brain of the relative duration of hours of darkness and light over a 24-hour period (daily cycle), but also throughout the year (seasonality).

Thanks to its lipophilicity, melatonin can easily diffuse in the body, including in the intracellular membranes, in particular in the neurons (synapses), hence its ability to act on the central nervous system.

Deficiency: Researchers have found that people with certain health conditions have lower than average levels of melatonin.
Commuters and people who work rotating shifts agree to suffer from sleep disturbances which seem to be caused by a change in their melatonin levels.

On has long been believed that melatonin production declines with age, but more recent studies suggest that it is not the case. However, researchers found that melatonin levels were abnormally low in insomniacs of all ages. The same is true for fibromyalgia and depression.

Prolonged exposure to electromagnetic fields can inhibit the production of melatonin. Heart patients have low melatonin levels.

Insomnia: Melatonin is effective in the treatment of primary insomnia, especially in the elderly.

It can also improve the sleep of younger people and the sleep period of children who are struggling with insomnia.

Melatonin may be effective in treating insomnia associated with depression.

In a six-week study of 34 subjects, the administration 3 mg of melatonin before bedtime was more effective than placebo in relieving insomnia due to the gradual elimination of benzodiazepines. It was observed that six months later, in most cases, the sleep quality of patients who continued to take melatonin was of good quality.

Disturbance of circadian rhythm linked sleep:

Research indicates that melatonin is effective in treating sleep disorders (related to disruption of circadian rhythms) in the cecum. It may also alleviate sleep disturbances in children and adolescents.

Time difference:

Melatonin has been observed to improve motor performance and "jet lag" conditions. The authors of an abstract published in 2002 reviewed the results of nine clinical trials comparing the effectiveness of melatonin with a placebo and concluded that it was not effective in preventing or reducing jet lag. Healing is most pronounced when traveling east across five or more time zones, but still measurable if you don't cross two to four time zones.

Migraine and Ailments headache:

There is a hypothesis that migraine and some headaches are caused or triggered by a disruption of circadian rhythms. Researchers believe that melatonin is helpful in these cases. Some case studies and preliminary research indicate that melatonin (10 mg at night) can relieve cluster headache

Results from a study conducted in Italy indicate that taking melatonin at the time of menopause may have anti-aging effects by reducing levels of prolactin and follicle-stimulating hormone, two hormones that increase in women during menopause. The majority of women who took 3mg of melatonin also reported improved mood or reduced symptoms of depression, unlike the group who took a placebo. Other data suggest that any cardiovascular benefits associated with melatonin use (lowering blood pressure) are only relevant to post-menopausal women on hormone replacement therapy.

How to get there:

- Apply different forms of insomnia.

- Treat Horton's headache, sleep disturbances in people with rotating schedules, migraine and headaches.

- Treat sleep disturbances related to disruption of circadian rhythms in the blind, children and adolescents with mental retardation, autism or suffering from certain neurological disorders. Avoid or reduce the effects of jet lag..
