Vitamin B 12 is also called cobalamin, because it contains a metal ion (cobalt). As such, it is the most common and complex vitamin.
Mechanism of action:
Vitamin B12 contributes to the formation of blood and marrow cells, carbohydrate metabolism, fats and proteins and the production of genetic material. It also assists nervous and cardiovascular mechanisms and plays a role in DNA synthesis.
Deficiency:
A Vitamin b12 deficiency can lead to irritation, anemia, depression, breathing problems, difficulty moving, memory loss, mood swings, dementia, and constipation. It is estimated that 10 to 15% of individuals over the age of 60 are affected by these problems. This results from a malfunction of the stomach, pancreas or small intestine in the elderly, decreasing the absorption of the vitamin. Thanks to its role in DNA synthesis, Vitamin B12 may have an important role in the prevention of cancer.
Vitamin B12 is recommended for people with vitamin B12 deficiency, digestive problems, anemia, fatigue, or mental or nervous problems.
