What is Yohimbine?
Yohimbe is a large tree that can reach 30 meters in height. It bears oval and acuminate leaves, 30 to 40 cm long. The buds, green, yellow or pink, open into fragrant white flowers turning yellow then red. Originally from the forests of tropical Africa, particularly Cameroon, Zaire and Gabon, the bark is harvested all year round. It is cut into pieces and left to dry in the sun.
In West Africa, the bark of yohimbe was traditionally recognized as an aphrodisiac. Traditional healers used it to treat angina pectoris and high blood pressure. However, it is its use as an aphrodisiac that has persisted over time. Until recently, yohimbine hydrochloride (a standardized extract of yohimbe bark) was prescribed to men with erectile dysfunction.
How does Yohimbine?
Yohimbine is extracted from the bark of Yohimbe. Its pharmacological action is attributed to this alkaloid, which accounts for 1% to 6% in the composition of the bark. Yohimbine can both increase the blood supply to the genitals and stimulate the activity of the sympathetic system responsible for nerve impulses that excite the genital tissues, which would make it a "real" aphrodisiac, unlike other substances. which act only indirectly on sexual function. Sildenafil belongs to this category of "true" aphrodisiacs.
Adrenaline is a hormone produced by the adrenal glands located above each kidney. It plays a leading role in the functioning of the so-called sympathetic nervous system, whose action is essentially excitatory.
Yohimbine acts by binding to adrenergic receptors ( more specifically alpha adrenergic) of the body's cells, thus preventing the release of adrenaline. These vasodilating effects are expressed essentially at the periphery of the arterial circulation at the level of the arteries of the skin, the intestines, the urinary system and the genital system, particularly at the level of the cavernous body of the penis, where it acts as aphrodisiac. Indeed, Yohimbine acts at the level of these cavernous bodies which contain many blood vessels which fill with blood during erection. Thus, in the treatment of male impotence, yohimbine allows the opening of the vessels and the improvement of the filling of these in this part of the penis, thereby allowing a better erection.
Yohimbine is also used in orthostatic hypotension syndrome, which results in a drop in blood pressure when an individual suddenly moves from a lying position to a standing position.
