Dimethylaminoethanol (DMAE), is a natural substance related to choline. DMAE facilitates the synthesis of the neurotransmitter acetylcholine in the brain and may also stimulate the synthesis of phosphatidylcholine.
It is found in fish. It has nootropic effects, and unlike choline itself, crosses the blood-brain barrier immediately. DMAE is methylated to choline in the brain. It is converted into choline by the liver, but the choline molecule is too large to easily pass the blood-brain barrier
The effects of DMAE:
• Powerful anti-aging effect
• Improves memory and intelligence
• Reduces depression
• Improves sleep quality
• Improves concentration potential
• Fights memory lapses and attention deficit disorder
What is DMAE used for?
Anti-aging:
The use of DMAE increases alertness and has a positive effect on mood. DMAE also reduces the accumulation of lipofuscin deposits in cells.
Cosmetic:
DMAE is used in the cosmetics industry because it has a slight firming and tightening effect on the skin, the origin of which is not well known. This effect could be due to membrane stabilization, increased acetylcholine, reduced lipofuscin deposition, or none of these reasons. DMAE cannot erase facial wilting but can reduce its progression. It seems that the effects are more noticeable with long-term use.
